Powerball and Mega Millions Are Both Near $200 Million—But the Tickets Are Not Alike
America’s two national jackpot games have landed in almost the same neighborhood at the same time.
Mega Millions enters its Tuesday, September 8 drawing with an estimated $193 million annuity jackpot and an $82.8 million cash option. Powerball, after producing no jackpot or Match 5 winner Monday night, moves to an estimated $207 million annuity jackpot with an $89.3 million cash option for Wednesday, September 9.
The advertised prizes are only $14 million apart. That makes this a useful side-by-side comparison, because similar jackpot headlines can hide very different tickets.
Start with the price: $5 versus $2
A Mega Millions play costs $5 under the game format introduced in 2025. Every ticket includes a randomly assigned multiplier of 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or 10X for non-jackpot prizes.
A basic Powerball play costs $2 in most participating jurisdictions. Power Play costs another $1 and multiplies eligible non-jackpot prizes. Powerball also offers Double Play in participating jurisdictions for an additional $1, using the same numbers in a separate drawing with a $10 million top prize.
So the bill for five basic plays is $25 for Mega Millions and $10 for Powerball. That does not make either game “due,” and buying more lines does not transform a long-shot game into a predictable one. The jackpot odds are remarkably close
Mega Millions lists jackpot odds of 1 in 290,472,336. Powerball lists jackpot odds of approximately 1 in 292.2 million. Both require matching five white balls plus the game’s special ball.
Their overall prize odds are close too: approximately 1 in 23 for Mega Millions and 1 in 24.9 for Powerball. But “winning any prize” combines multiple prize tiers and says nothing about which amount a particular ticket will receive.

The cash options tell almost the same story
The cash amount is what a winner can choose as a single pre-tax payment instead of the advertised annuity.
Mega Millions’ $82.8 million cash option is about 42.9% of its $193 million annuity estimate. Powerball’s $89.3 million cash option is about 43.1% of its $207 million annuity estimate. Despite the different games, the current cash-to-annuity proportions are nearly identical.
Both figures are estimates until ticket sales and other financial inputs are finalized, and both are before federal and applicable state taxes. Mega Millions draws Tuesday night at 11 p.m. Eastern. Powerball follows Wednesday at 10:59 p.m. Eastern. Sales cutoffs vary by jurisdiction and may occur well before the drawing.
